A 38 year old man is under arrest on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and police are appealing for witnesses after two cyclists, a man and a woman, were killed in a hit and run incident in Bristol this afternoon.
This is Bristol says the fatal collision occurred just before 4pm in Lower Hanham Road, Hanham a suburb on the eastern outskirts of the city. Witnesses say the couple who were local were riding a tandem they had recently bought when they were hit by a Citroen car. The driver is reported to have abandoned the car and run away before police and emergency services arrived. Both cyclists died at the scene.
This evening about the incident Avon and Somerset Police released the following statement appealing for witnesses:
"At around 4pm today (Sunday January 27), a vehicle collided with two cyclists on Lower Hanham road. The man and a woman died at the scene as a result of their injuries.
"The road currently remains closed and investigations continue.
"A 38 year old man who left the scene of the collision has handed himself in at a police station and has been arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving.
"Anyone who was in the area around the time of this incident or who witnessed this collision is asked to call us on 101."
